Definition

LAS and LAZ are standard file formats for storing LiDAR point cloud data. LAS is a widely adopted open format designed specifically for laser scanning and LiDAR, while LAZ is a compressed version of LAS that stores the same data in much smaller files.

Together they are among the most common ways to hold and share large LiDAR datasets. LAS keeps the data in full, and LAZ shrinks it without losing information, making storage and transfer easier.

In simple terms, LAS is the standard LiDAR point cloud format, and LAZ is its compressed, space-saving version.

How It Works

A LAS file stores each LiDAR point along with detailed attributes such as position, intensity, return information, and classification, all in a structured format built for large datasets. This makes it well suited to airborne and terrestrial LiDAR data.

LAZ applies lossless compression to LAS data, greatly reducing file size while keeping every point and attribute intact. Because it is lossless, data can be moved between LAS and LAZ freely, so teams often store and share LiDAR as LAZ and work with it as LAS.
