Definition

Line of sight is the straight, unobstructed path between two points, such as an observer and a target, or a transmitter and a receiver. If nothing blocks that direct path, the two points are said to have line of sight to each other.

The idea is important because many technologies, from surveying instruments to drones and wireless signals, depend on a clear direct path to work properly. When obstacles like buildings, hills, or trees get in the way, the line of sight is broken.

In simple terms, line of sight means being able to draw an unblocked straight line between two points, something many measuring and communication systems rely on.

How It Works

Whether a clear line of sight exists depends on the positions of the two points and anything between them. A survey instrument, for example, must be able to see its target directly to measure it, and a drone pilot may be required to keep the aircraft within visual line of sight for safe control.
