Definition

A floor plan is a scaled drawing that shows a building or room as seen from directly above, as if the roof were removed. It maps out the layout of walls, doors, windows, and spaces so you can understand how a building is arranged.

Floor plans are one of the most widely used documents in architecture, real estate, and construction because they turn a three-dimensional space into a clear, easy-to-read map. They can show a single room or an entire multi-storey building.

In everyday terms, a floor plan is the blueprint of a space that tells you where everything is and how the areas connect.

How It Works

Traditionally, floor plans were drawn by hand from tape-measure readings. Today they are usually produced in CAD or BIM software, and increasingly they are generated from reality-capture data. When a space is scanned with a laser scanner, the resulting point cloud can be sliced at a set height to reveal wall positions, which are then traced into an accurate plan.

A finished floor plan is drawn to scale, meaning distances on the drawing correspond to real distances in the building. Symbols and annotations mark features such as doors, stairs, fixtures, and dimensions so the plan communicates clearly to builders, designers, and clients.

Applications

Floor plans are used in construction, renovation, real estate marketing, interior design, facility management, and emergency planning. Architects use them to design layouts, contractors to build accurately, real estate agents to market properties, and facility managers to plan space usage and maintenance. Scan-based floor plans are especially valuable for renovating older buildings where original drawings are missing or outdated.
