Definition

3D laser scanning is a method of capturing the exact shape and dimensions of objects and spaces using laser light. A scanner sends out laser pulses, measures how they return from surfaces, and records millions of precise 3D points, forming a detailed point cloud.

This produces a highly accurate digital copy of whatever is scanned, from a single part to an entire building. Because it captures so many points so quickly, it is far faster and more detailed than measuring by hand.

In simple terms, 3D laser scanning uses lasers to create a precise 3D digital record of real objects and environments.

How It Works

A 3D laser scanner emits laser beams and measures either the time each pulse takes to return or a shift in the light wave to work out distance. Combined with the direction of each beam, this fixes every measured point in three-dimensional space.

The scanner captures points across its field of view, and multiple scan positions are often combined, or registered, into one complete point cloud. The finished data can be measured directly or turned into 3D models, BIM, and other deliverables.

Applications

3D laser scanning is used in construction, engineering, manufacturing, heritage, and forensics. It documents as-built conditions, supports scan-to-BIM and quality control, inspects components, and preserves historic structures, providing accurate data wherever precise measurement is needed.
