Aerial Mapping

Learn what aerial mapping is, how aircraft and drones capture data to create maps, the main methods, applications, and benefits for surveying and planning.

Definition

Aerial mapping is the process of creating maps and 3D data of the ground by capturing it from above, using aircraft, drones, or satellites. By viewing large areas from the air, it records terrain, buildings, and features quickly and over wide extents.

The captured imagery or sensor data is processed into products such as maps, orthophotos, and elevation models. Aerial mapping makes it possible to survey areas that would be slow, difficult, or unsafe to cover entirely on the ground.

In simple terms, aerial mapping is making accurate maps of the land by capturing it from the sky.

How It Works

In aerial mapping, an aircraft or drone flies over an area following a planned path, capturing overlapping images or sensor data such as LiDAR. Position information is recorded alongside the data so it can be tied to real-world coordinates.

Software then processes the data, using photogrammetry or LiDAR techniques to build orthomosaics, digital elevation models, and 3D representations of the ground. Ground control points help ensure the finished maps are accurate and correctly georeferenced.

Applications

Aerial mapping is used in surveying, urban planning, agriculture, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure. It supports topographic mapping, land management, construction planning, and change monitoring, providing broad, accurate coverage that ground methods alone cannot easily match.

Benefits

  • Wide-area coverage captured quickly.
  • Accurate maps, models, and elevation data.
  • Safer surveying of large or remote areas.
  • Repeatable capture for monitoring change.
  • A strong base for planning and analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is aerial mapping used for?

It is used for topographic mapping, planning, agriculture, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure surveys over large areas.

What methods are used in aerial mapping?

Common methods include aerial photogrammetry from overlapping images and LiDAR scanning, captured by aircraft or drones.

How accurate is aerial mapping?

Accuracy depends on the sensor, altitude, and use of ground control points, and can reach centimetre level for drone surveys.

What is the difference between aerial mapping and drone mapping?

Drone mapping is a form of aerial mapping that specifically uses unmanned aircraft, while aerial mapping also includes manned aircraft and satellites.
