Definition

A colorized point cloud is a 3D point cloud in which each point is given a real-world colour, usually taken from photographs of the scene. Instead of plain or intensity-shaded points, the cloud looks lifelike, closely resembling the actual space or object.

Adding colour makes point clouds far easier to interpret, helping viewers recognise materials, features, and context at a glance. It combines accurate geometry with realistic appearance.

In simple terms, a colorized point cloud is a 3D scan where every point carries its true colour, making it look real.

How It Works

During or after scanning, photographs of the scene are captured, either by the scanner itself or a separate camera. Software then maps the colour from these images onto the corresponding points in the cloud, so each point takes on the colour of the surface it represents.

Accurate colorization depends on good alignment between the images and the point data. The result is a point cloud that not only measures the space precisely but also displays it in natural colour for easier understanding.
