Definition

A ground control point, or GCP, is a clearly marked spot on the ground with precisely known coordinates, used to improve the accuracy of aerial mapping. By placing GCPs across a site and measuring their exact positions, surveyors give drone and aerial data reliable real-world references.

GCPs appear in the captured imagery, so the mapping software can match them to their known coordinates and correct the whole dataset. They are a key ingredient in producing survey-grade results from drones.

In simple terms, a GCP is a marked, precisely located point on the ground that helps make aerial maps accurate.

How It Works

Before or during a flight, targets are placed on the ground and their exact coordinates are measured, often using GNSS equipment. When the drone captures the site, these targets show up in many images.

During processing, the software identifies each GCP in the imagery and ties it to its measured coordinates. This anchors the entire model to the correct real-world positions, sharply improving both absolute accuracy and the alignment of the final maps and models.

GCPs are used in drone mapping, aerial surveying, and construction. They ensure orthophotos, elevation models, and point clouds are accurate and correctly georeferenced, which is essential for measurement, design, and any work requiring survey-grade precision.
