Definition

Ground Sampling Distance (GSD) is the real-world distance between the centres of two neighbouring pixels in an aerial or satellite image. In practice, it tells you how much ground each pixel covers, which is a direct measure of how detailed an image is.

A small GSD, such as one centimetre per pixel, means each pixel represents a tiny patch of ground, so the image is highly detailed. A large GSD means each pixel covers a wider area, so fine details are lost. GSD is one of the most important quality indicators in drone mapping and photogrammetry.

Put simply, GSD answers the question: how much real ground does a single pixel in this image actually represent?

How It Works

GSD depends on the camera’s sensor and focal length, the resolution of the image, and the height at which the drone or aircraft flies. Flying lower or using a longer lens produces a smaller GSD and sharper detail, while flying higher covers more area at the cost of detail.

Surveyors calculate the required GSD before a flight to make sure the final data meets the accuracy needed for the project. The general relationship links sensor size, focal length, image width, and flight altitude, so adjusting the flight height is the most common way to control GSD in the field.

GSD is central to drone surveying, aerial mapping, precision agriculture, and infrastructure inspection. Survey teams set a target GSD to guarantee that maps and models are accurate enough for measurement, agronomists use it to detect crop issues, and inspectors rely on it to see small defects on structures.
