Definition

An Inertial Measurement Unit, or IMU, is a small electronic device that measures motion and orientation. It senses how something is accelerating, rotating, and tilting, allowing a system to understand how it is moving through space.

IMUs are built from sensors that track linear acceleration and rotation. Combined, these readings describe a device’s movement without needing any outside reference such as GPS, which makes them valuable when external signals are unavailable.

In simple terms, an IMU is a motion sensor that tells a device which way it is facing and how it is moving, moment by moment.

How It Works

An IMU typically contains accelerometers that measure changes in speed and gyroscopes that measure rotation, and often magnetometers that sense direction. Together these sensors report movement along and around three axes, giving a full picture of orientation and motion.

By continuously tracking these readings, a system can estimate how far and in what direction it has moved. Because small errors add up over time, IMUs are usually combined with other data, such as GNSS or scanning sensors, to keep positioning accurate.

Applications

IMUs are used in drones, mobile mapping systems, robotics, smartphones, and navigation equipment. In reality capture they help mobile and airborne scanners track their position and orientation as they move, ensuring the captured data lines up correctly into an accurate map or model.
