Definition

Laser scanning is a technology that measures the shape of objects and spaces using laser light. A scanner rapidly fires laser pulses at surrounding surfaces and records where each one lands, building a dense cloud of accurate 3D points.

The result is a precise digital record of whatever is scanned, captured far faster than manual measurement. Laser scanning can be done from the ground, from the air, or on the move, depending on the project.

How It Works

A laser scanner sends out beams of light and measures how they return from surfaces, using either the time of flight or a phase shift to calculate distance. Paired with the precise direction of each beam, this places every point accurately in three dimensions.

Scanners capture huge numbers of points across their field of view, forming a point cloud. Data from several positions or passes can be combined into one dataset, then processed into models, drawings, or other deliverables. Systems range from tripod-mounted terrestrial scanners to airborne and mobile units.
