Definition

A surface normal is a direction that points straight out from a surface, showing which way that surface is facing. In 3D data, every point or face can have a normal that indicates its orientation in space.

Normals are essential for understanding and displaying 3D shapes correctly. They tell software how light should hit a surface, which side is the outside, and how surfaces relate to one another.

In simple terms, a surface normal is an arrow pointing away from a surface that tells you the direction it faces.

How It Works

For a flat face, the normal is the direction perpendicular to it. For a point in a point cloud, the normal is estimated from the arrangement of nearby points, approximating the direction the local surface faces. Software calculates these directions automatically.

Once known, normals help with tasks like shading and rendering, where they determine how light reflects, and with reconstruction, where they guide how points are turned into smooth surfaces. Consistent normals are important for accurate, natural-looking 3D results.
