Definition

PPK, or Post-Processed Kinematic, is a GNSS technique that achieves centimetre-level positioning by correcting satellite data after it has been collected, rather than in real time. The raw data from a moving receiver and a base station is combined later during processing.

Because corrections are applied afterward, PPK does not need a constant live connection between units in the field. This makes it reliable in situations where a real-time link would be difficult, while still delivering high accuracy.

In simple terms, PPK reaches precise positions by fixing the GNSS data later, in the office rather than live.

How It Works

During capture, both a base station at a known point and a moving rover record raw GNSS data with accurate timing. Unlike real-time methods, no corrections are exchanged in the field, so the equipment simply logs its measurements.

Afterward, software combines the base and rover data, using the shared satellite observations to cancel out errors and calculate precise positions along the rover’s path. The result is centimetre-level accuracy without needing a live radio or network link during the survey.

Applications

PPK is used in drone mapping, surveying, and corridor mapping. It is especially useful where maintaining a real-time correction link is impractical, such as over long distances or in remote areas, while still delivering the accuracy needed for precise results.
