RTK (Real-Time Kinematic)

Learn what RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) is, how it delivers centimetre-level GNSS accuracy in real time, how it works, and where it is used in surveying.

Definition

RTK, or Real-Time Kinematic, is a technique that boosts GNSS positioning to centimetre-level accuracy in real time. It works by comparing satellite signals received at a fixed base station with those received by a moving receiver, correcting errors on the spot.

Standard GNSS is only accurate to a few metres, which is not precise enough for surveying. RTK removes most of those errors instantly, delivering the high accuracy needed for professional positioning as you work.

In simple terms, RTK is a method that makes satellite positioning accurate to centimetres, right away.

How It Works

In an RTK setup, a base station sits at a known location and continuously measures the errors in the GNSS signals it receives. It broadcasts corrections to a rover, the receiver being used in the field, which applies them immediately to its own measurements.

Because both units observe the same satellites, the shared errors cancel out, leaving a highly accurate position for the rover. This happens live, so the surveyor sees precise coordinates in real time rather than waiting for later processing.

Applications

RTK is used in land surveying, construction layout, drone mapping, and agriculture. It provides precise positions for setting out, collecting control points, and georeferencing, wherever centimetre accuracy is needed immediately in the field.

Benefits

  • Centimetre-level accuracy in real time.
  • Immediate results without post-processing.
  • Reliable positioning for surveying and layout.
  • Accurate control for drone mapping.
  • Efficient, on-the-spot field work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is RTK used for?

It is used for precise, real-time positioning in surveying, construction layout, drone mapping, and agriculture.

How accurate is RTK?

RTK can achieve centimetre-level accuracy, far better than standard GNSS positioning.

What is the difference between RTK and PPK?

RTK applies corrections live in the field, while PPK applies them afterward during post-processing.

What do you need for RTK?

RTK needs a base station at a known point and a rover that receives corrections in real time.
