Definition

A scan position is the specific location where a laser scanner is set up to capture data. Each time the scanner is placed and records its surroundings from that spot, it creates one scan from that position.

Because a scanner only sees what is visible from where it stands, capturing a complete site requires multiple scan positions. Planning these positions well is key to covering everything without gaps.

In simple terms, a scan position is one spot where the scanner sits and captures the space around it.

How It Works

At each scan position, the scanner records the surfaces it can see, producing a point cloud centred on that location. Objects block the laser, creating shadows, so areas hidden from one position must be captured from another.

Surveyors plan positions so that scans overlap enough to be joined together, or registered, into one complete dataset. The number and placement of positions balances full coverage against the time it takes to complete the survey.
