Definition

Thermal imaging is a technology that captures the heat given off by objects and turns it into a visible image. Instead of relying on light the way an ordinary camera does, a thermal camera senses infrared energy, which every object emits based on its temperature.

The result is an image where warmer areas and cooler areas appear as different colours or shades, revealing details the human eye cannot see. This makes it possible to spot heat patterns, energy loss, or hidden faults.

Put simply, thermal imaging lets you see temperature, showing where things are hot or cold rather than how they look under normal light.

How It Works

A thermal camera contains a sensor that detects infrared radiation across a scene. It measures how much heat each part of the view emits and assigns colours or grey tones to represent those temperatures, producing a thermal image, sometimes called a thermogram.

Because the camera reads emitted heat rather than reflected light, it works in complete darkness and can reveal issues hidden beneath surfaces, such as moisture, missing insulation, or overheating components. When mounted on drones, thermal cameras can survey large areas from above quickly and safely.

Applications

Thermal imaging is used in building inspection, electrical maintenance, energy audits, firefighting, security, agriculture, and search and rescue. Inspectors use it to find heat loss and moisture in buildings, electricians to spot overheating equipment, and drone operators to survey solar farms, roofs, and infrastructure for faults.
