Definition

A coordinate system is a framework of numbers used to describe exactly where a point is located. In mapping and surveying, it provides a consistent way to pin any position on the Earth to a set of values, so different datasets can line up correctly.

Without a shared coordinate system, spatial data collected by different tools or at different times would not fit together. The system defines the reference point, the units, and the rules for how positions are measured.

In simple terms, a coordinate system is the agreed grid that gives every location a precise, comparable address.

How It Works

A coordinate system defines an origin, axes, and units, then expresses each location as values measured from that reference.
