Definition

A dense point cloud is a point cloud made up of a very large number of closely spaced points, capturing fine detail of a surface or scene. The higher the density of points, the more accurately the cloud represents small features and subtle shapes.

Dense clouds are the detailed result of processing, as opposed to a sparse cloud, which contains fewer points and shows only the broad structure. Density is a measure of how richly a scene has been captured.

In simple terms, a dense point cloud is a highly detailed 3D scan packed with points that reveal fine detail.

How It Works

In photogrammetry, an initial sparse cloud is created from matched features, then a densification step calculates many more points to fill in detail, producing the dense cloud. In laser scanning, density depends on how finely the scanner samples the scene.

Higher density captures more detail but also means larger files and more processing. Choosing the right density balances the level of detail needed against the practical limits of storage and performance.
