Definition

Level of Detail (LOD) describes how much information and geometric precision a 3D model or BIM element contains at a given stage. It is a way of stating how developed and reliable a model is, so everyone on a project knows what they can and cannot trust in it.

A low LOD might show a rough placeholder shape, while a high LOD includes exact dimensions, materials, and detailed components. LOD gives teams a shared language for describing model maturity.

In short, Level of Detail answers a practical question: how much can I rely on this part of the model right now?

How It Works

LOD is usually expressed in defined stages that increase from conceptual to highly detailed. Early stages represent approximate size and location, middle stages add accurate geometry, and later stages include precise, fabrication-ready information along with data such as materials and performance.
