PPK (Post-Process Kinematic)

Learn how PPK (Post-Process Kinematic) delivers precise GNSS positioning by correcting data after capture, its workflow, and how it supports drone mapping.

Definition

PPK, Post-Process Kinematic, is a GNSS positioning method that produces highly accurate coordinates by correcting recorded satellite data after a survey rather than during it. It combines data from a base station and a moving receiver in the processing stage.

This post-processing approach removes the need for a live correction link in the field while still reaching centimetre-level accuracy. It is especially valued in drone mapping and demanding survey environments.

In simple terms, PPK gets precise positions by correcting the recorded GNSS data afterward instead of in real time.

How It Works

In the field, a base station at a known point and a rover both log raw GNSS observations with precise time stamps, without exchanging corrections live. This keeps the data collection simple and robust even in areas with poor connectivity.

After the survey, software aligns the base and rover data by their timing and uses the shared satellite information to eliminate errors, computing an accurate path and positions for the rover. The outcome is centimetre-level accuracy achieved entirely in processing.

Applications

PPK is widely used in drone mapping and surveying, particularly for corridor projects and remote sites. It suits situations where a live correction link is hard to maintain, giving reliable, precise georeferencing for maps and models.

Benefits

  • Precise positioning without a live field link.
  • Robust in remote or low-connectivity areas.
  • Reliable, centimetre-level accuracy.
  • Simple, robust field data logging.
  • A strong fit for drone-based mapping.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does PPK work?

A base station and rover log raw GNSS data in the field, then software corrects it afterward to compute precise positions.

When is PPK preferred over RTK?

PPK is preferred when a live correction link is impractical, such as in remote areas or over long corridors.

How accurate is PPK?

PPK can achieve centimetre-level accuracy, comparable to RTK.

Is PPK good for drone mapping?

Yes, PPK is widely used in drone mapping because it provides precise georeferencing without a live field link.
