Definition

Structured light scanning is a 3D scanning method that captures the shape of an object by projecting a known pattern of light onto it and observing how that pattern deforms over the surface. The distortions reveal the object’s precise contours.

It is especially good at capturing small to medium objects in fine detail, making it popular where high accuracy on surfaces and shapes is needed. The result is a detailed 3D model or point cloud.

In simple terms, structured light scanning reads the shape of an object by watching how projected light bends across it.

How It Works

A structured light scanner projects patterns, often stripes or grids, onto an object while one or more cameras record how the patterns appear on its surface. Because the projected pattern is known, the way it distorts tells the system the exact depth and shape at each point.

By combining these observations, the scanner reconstructs a detailed 3D surface. Multiple scans from different angles are often merged to capture an object completely, producing an accurate digital model.
