Definition
A UAV, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, is an aircraft that flies without a pilot on board. It is controlled remotely by an operator on the ground or flies autonomously along a pre-programmed route. Most people know UAVs by their more common name: drones.
UAVs range from small consumer quadcopters to large fixed-wing aircraft used for surveying and defence. In the geospatial world, they matter because they can carry cameras and sensors over sites quickly and safely, gathering data that would otherwise require aircraft, scaffolding, or people working at height.
In short, a UAV is a flying data-collection platform, a way to see and measure the world from above without putting anyone in the air.
How It Works
A UAV combines motors, a flight controller, GPS or GNSS positioning, and onboard sensors that keep it stable in the air. The operator either steers it manually or uploads a flight plan that tells the drone exactly where to fly, how high, and where to take photos.
For mapping work, the UAV flies a grid pattern and captures overlapping images or laser measurements of the ground. Software later stitches this data together using photogrammetry or LiDAR processing to build orthophotos, 3D models, and point clouds of the surveyed area.
Applications
UAVs are used across surveying, construction, agriculture, inspection, filmmaking, and emergency response. Surveyors use them for aerial mapping and volume measurement, construction teams track site progress, farmers monitor crop health, and inspectors examine roofs, bridges, and towers without dangerous climbs. They are also invaluable for search-and-rescue and disaster assessment where speed and access matter.
